Lawson State Community College
“Everyone no matter who they are, deserves a chance to succeed.” President Obama
"Leveraging the transformative power of education, Lawson State Community College (LSCC), historically recognized as a Black college (HBCU), has played a pivotal role in providing diverse individuals with opportunities for academic success. Prior to the Civil Rights movement, HBCUs were instrumental in affording Black Americans access to higher education, facilitating their pursuit of professional careers, graduate degrees, and advanced learning in an inclusive environment.
In 2017, Lanette Blankenship joined LSCC as the full-time Art Instructor, contributing to the college's mission of offering innovative instruction and lifelong learning opportunities. This commitment aims to prepare students for college transfer, gainful employment, and career advancement. Throughout her tenure at LSCC, Blankenship delivered a diverse range of courses, including ART 100 - Art Appreciation (both in-person and online), ART 113 - Drawing 1, ART 114 - Drawing 2, ART 121 - Two-Dimensional Composition 1, ART 127 - Three-Dimensional Composition, ART 203 - Art History 1, and ART 204 - Art History 2."
"When fostering a safe and inclusive environment for artists to explore their identities, profound transformations unfold. The realm of art transcends exclusivity, welcoming individuals from all backgrounds to partake in the joy of creation. At Lawson State Community College (LSCC), the students became catalysts for personal growth, leaving an indelible impact on my life that words cannot fully convey without delving into sentiments of profound sensitivity.
To the exceptionally gifted students who graced my classes, your dedication, hard work, and joy in the art-making process have elevated you to a prominent position within my teaching portfolio—the epitome of excellence.
I firmly believe that every highly qualified professional entering the field of education in the United States should dedicate a minimum of five years to serving the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) community. Diversity training goes beyond mere pedagogy; it involves building trust, fostering loyalty, and learning the nuanced language of the community being served. Without the foundation of trust, students may withhold respect, and without allyship, they may disengage from the educational journey.
To uplift through higher education, one must invest the time to understand and speak the language of the community, ensuring a genuine connection. It is an imperative call to 'Rise Up' and transform our world. The elevation of our civilization should not be contingent on factors like race, gender, wealth, or age, as every individual deserves an equal opportunity to reach for the stars, irrespective of their background."
